Federal Independent MPs are poised to pull the rug from under the Labor government if its leadership changes.

Julia Gillard continued to dodge leadership speculation on Friday as she joked with the Prime Minister’s XI and Sri Lankan cricket sides and officials at the washed-out Manuka Oval in Canberra on Friday.

With opinion polls showing Labor lagging well behind the coalition, caucus members – who will meet in Canberra on Sunday for a pre-parliament strategy day – appeared divided into three camps: those in favour of Ms Gillard, those backing Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, and a large rump in two minds about whether to stick with the prime minister or someone other than Mr Rudd.

But she received support from NSW independent Rob Oakeshott, who said AAP federal Labor had “rocks in its head” if the party thought it could change leaders without it affecting the parliament.

Mr Oakeshott is one of four cross-benchers who backed Ms Gillard into minority government after the 2010 election.

Part of the agreement is for the parliament to run its full term and for an election to be held in late 2013.

Mr Oakeshott said a leadership change could lead to the end of the Labor government.

“If the Labor Party thinks they can make an old-style change of leader without it affecting the make-up of the parliament they have rocks in their heads,” he told AAP on Friday.

“They need to be sensitive to the make-up of the parliament and there are supply and confidence agreements in place.”

Mr Oakeshott said any incoming Labor leader should not assume they could go to the governor-general and seek a snap election.

“We are obliged to sort it out as a group of parliamentarians,” he said.

Fellow independent Andrew Wilkie has already withdrawn his support because of the government’s scrapping of its promise to him on poker-machine reform.

NSW cross-bencher Tony Windsor said he would “take advice” if there was a change.

The Greens have previously flagged a similar position.

Ms Gillard used an interview with Canberra radio station 2CC to contrast her style of leadership with that of Mr Rudd – described by one Labor insider as having acted
.... end of excerpt
Article Source: http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-national/all-deals-off-without-gillard-oakeshott-20120203-1qw4e.html

Four Artists Explore How Parts Make up The Whole

February 2, 2012 (Clinton, NJ) — Opening Sunday, February 5, 2012 at the Hunterdon Art Museum is an exhibition of work by four artists: Astrid Bowlby, Ben Butler, Sebastian Rug, and Christopher Skura. The show, titled Fragmented, explores how all four of the artists presented create art work that is the result of extremely labor intensive processes. The end result of the effort is art that is solid, yet fragile; if one piece or thread was moved or removed, the entire structure would collapse. The public is invited to an opening reception February 5 from 2pm-4pm.

Each piece in the show is constructed of repeating parts. In some works, such as Sebastian Rug’s drawings, it is a repetition of the same or similar marks. In others, such as those by Christopher Skura, the repeating parts are the layers of drawing, rather than the marks themselves. They are all assembled piece by piece, whether drawn on paper or constructed from wood.

Astrid Bowlby grows her drawings through a slow and meticulous process. She is focused on building a surface and often it is this surface that offers to her a pattern; a pattern that she continues, until the passage of time and the darkness of the work tells her to stop. Astrid Bowlby finds her influences for drawing in disparate sources: geological patterns of growth, embroidery, knitting and weaving. Bowlby lives and works in Philadelphia, PA.

Ben Butler creates organic drawings and sculpture by allowing his process to develop incrementally. The drawings are woven together with a fluidity that allows the amorphous shape to grow into something spectacular, but not necessarily identifiable. Butler’s sculptures encompass the same process, but involve the actual work of building as he uses the smaller elements to substantiate and invigorate the final work of art. Butler lets his work reveal itself to the viewer in time, just as he lets his form reveal itself through his process.
.... end of excerpt
Article Source: http://www.prlog.org/11789567-fragmented-opens-sunday-february-5-at-hunterdon-art-museum.html

Hand picking the ideal place to live is something that everyone dreams of. But for store owner and rug designer John Tracy, it was a reality. Two days each in nine cities, from his hometown of Jackson Hole, to Austin, Denver, Houston, Seattle, San Francisco, Dallas, Sacramento, Seattle, then to Vancouver – that’s the path he took before choosing to plant his home décor and gift boutique, INDIGO, right here in Big D.

Located in the West Village, the shop is filled with hand-crafted items from all over the world, ranging from rugs (the specialty) to woven baskets, journals, textiles, furniture and one-of-a-kind antiques. Tracy describes the style as being relaxed, western, contemporary and “not Persian.” He touts the rugs as being refined and crafted, with the care and labor of Old World rugs – hand spun wools and vegetable dies. Rugs that are nearly indestructible and will last a lifetime.

“It takes six men, six months to weave a 10-by-14 foot rug.” Tracy explains “They move at a pace of four centimeters a day.”

He once rocked a ponytail and cut a rug in Rio. This wasn’t pretty, folks. About that man card, Tommy Boy.

In an email, supermodel Gisele Bundchen implored friends and family to pray hard for her husband to win Sunday’s Super Bowl against the Giants.

“I feel Tommy really needs our prayer, our support and love at this time,” Bundchen wrote in the message sent out to Brady-clan insiders.

“My sweet friends and family,” the email began. “This Sunday will be a really important day in my husband’s life. He and his team worked so hard to get to this point and now they need us more than ever to send them positive energy so they can fulfill their dream of winning this Super Bowl.”

The Brazilian added, “So I kindly ask all of you to join me on this positive chain and pray for him, so he can feel confident, healthy and strong. Envision him happy and fulfilled experiencing with his team a victory this Sunday. Thank you for your love and support. Love, G .”

Reached via email, Bundchen said Wednesday, “I am surprised that you received this email; it was a private note only sent to close friends and family.”

Asked about the email Thursday, Brady said: ”I don’t know anything about that, so I don’t know what it is.”

Asked if his wife had given him any advice, he said: ”Throw the ball quickly. She doesn’t like it when I get hit very often. My guys up front do a great job of protecting me.”

The last time the two teams met in a Super Bowl, in 2008, came shortly after the Patriots’ power couple started dating but before they tied the knot in 2009.

Bundchen’s pleas for prayer make her sound a lot less confident in the Pats’ chances Sunday than her “Tommy.”
